Creating a Better Home Office Space
As a freelance writer, I work from home. Sometimes this can be an amazing thing and sometimes it can be kind of difficult. With two children out of school for the summer, things can get a bit hectic. If you work at home as well, one of the most important things is to create a better home office space. Ideally, this would be a place where you can get some privacy and solitude while you do your work! Your work will suffer if you have to deal with a lot of noise, clutter and frustration - so here are a few tips to help you out!
Privacy -
If you can find a place in your home to create a private workspace, this is great! Whether you have an actual home office or you're stealing some space in the den or basement - try to find a quiet, private place that will be conducive to work. If nothing else, create a divider with a screen or curtain that will shut your office area off from the rest of the room. Because I'm a mother - one thing that really helps me is creating 'office hours.' At certain times, I am simply unavailable because I'm working - of course, as a stay at home Mom, this gets interrupted from time to time. For the most part, though, I am left to work uninterrupted. Of course, I balance that out with play time and quality time with my children. If you have a hard time concentrating on your work, try to find a space that is all yours. Privacy can really help get those creative juices flowing!
Organization -
I'm not sure about you but one of the things that can really keep me from concentrating is a lot of clutter. I find that when things are nice and neat around me - I can concentrate and focus more on work. Try and create some organization in your home office area. A few things that might help you accomplish this are:
- Shelving for your office area.
- Folders and file drawers to organize important papers.
- Cups and containers to hold pencils, pens, paperclips, etc.
- Paper baskets to sort important papers.
Just having these things in your office area to reduce clutter will really help you feel better! You can use the shelves to store products or notebooks, paper and binders. The folders and file drawers can be used for client information, product information, sales, book keeping info or whatever you need to keep in a safe place. You can reduce the clutter on your desk by using the cups and containers and sort bills, paperwork, invoices or other things in the paper baskets. Reducing the clutter will help you feel more like working and less frustrated!
Comforts -
Another great thing that will help you feel cozier in your home office area are comforts. For instance, if your home office area is in the basement, why not move a coffee pot and some mugs down there? This way, you can brew a cup of rich coffee whenever you feel one of those stress headaches coming on! Another great idea is to place a cozy chair in your office area. When that computer seat gets to be a bit too confining, plug in the laptop and recline. Or, just take a few moments to yourself before getting back to work. (Just don't fall asleep!) A few comforts in your work area can really help you stay on track and feel better throughout your day!
Using these tips and tricks can help you make working at home much easier. Although most people would think it's better than an office - it can be really easy to get side-tracked and lose focus at home. Creating a better home office area will help you stay on track and on time! Good luck and remember to stop by Priceless Writers if you're in need of unique, custom content for your home business.

I had never thought of using a divider or curtain to separate my space!!! Great suggestions Samantha!
We just rearranged our living room furniture last night and I made my position on the couch with my laptop a permanent feature. It's comfortable but not the most work-conducive!
I'm finding that limited space (no extra room for an actual office) makes the need for a wireless network more important and will be concentrating on that project next!
Excellent advice! I'll definitely be using them to create my own home office area!!!
